Midrand racer takes King of the Mountain crown at Speed Classic Cape Town

Midrand’s speed sensation, Franco Scribante, proved unstoppable as he claimed the King of the Mountain title at Cape Town’s thrilling new hill climb event.

Claiming the coveted King of the Mountain title in his powerful 2018 Nissan GTR R35, Midrand-based racing ace Franco Scribante roared to victory at the inaugural Speed Classic Cape Town hill climb over the weekend of October 26 and 27.

The event, held on the scenic Philip Kgosana Drive, transformed Cape Town’s cityscape into a playground for pure speed, with nearly 80 high-performance cars – from Ferraris and McLarens to heavily modified single-seaters – going head-to-head on the 1.8km course beneath the shadow of Table Mountain.

Scribante, who narrowly missed out on the Classic Car Saturday title after finishing just fractions of a second behind Charles Arton, made up for it in dramatic style on Sunday.

His blistering time of 35.26 seconds secured him the King of the Mountain crown, edging out Reghard Roets in a 2014 Nissan GTR R35 by 0.599 seconds, with Dawie Joubert completing the podium in his Lotus Exige at 37.407 seconds.

“It was a really great day for us,” Scribante said after his win. “We were absolutely nowhere when we got to the class finals, so I knew we would have to dig deep. I didn’t know if it would be enough, so it was a miracle that it all came together for the final run. I cannot wait to be back again next year.”

Race director Enzo Kuun described the course as one of the most scenic tracks in the world.

“To race with Table Mountain to my right, the Atlantic Ocean to my left, and Lion’s Head behind me was an absolute privilege and an epic experience.”

Event director Garth Mackintosh hailed the success of the first weekend, which drew an estimated 15 000 spectators to the venue and over 180 000 online viewers across the two days.

“To see our vision come to fruition has been extremely satisfying. I think we can only get bigger and better from here, and we are ready to invest and create a future event that can only go from strength to strength.”
