Kyalami couple proves love thrives on running
A couple that runs together indeed stays together. Meet the Newmans, who found love for each other and running.
Dedication, endurance and a shared passion for running have kept Kyalami Estates couple Sharon and Duane Newman on track for more than two decades.
Their most recent achievement came at the Rand Athletic Club (RAC) 21km and 10km race, where they once again put their love for the sport to the test.

Sharon and Duane met in 1993 where they found love in each other through Sharon’s brother who was a colleague of Duane’s.
They later started their running journey in 2002 where they also became members of the Midrand Striders.

While Duane shares that he initially took up running to lose weight, Sharon joined after a few months of seeing how dedicated her husband and how interested she became with running.
The two completed the 21 km race and crossed the finish line in the same time of 01:54:14.
They also recently ran in the 2026 Two Oceans Marathon where they got their permanent numbers because they have completed the race multiple times.
They also shared that they have been preparing for the Comrades Marathon which will mark Sharon’s 20th run and Duane’s 19th.

As members of the Midrand Striders they will also be participating in the Comrades Send-Off Breakfast Run that the Midrand Striders are hosting.
The Newmans believe that finding a partner you enjoy doing activities with is significant.

“You need to find a person you enjoy doing things with and spending time with because when that happens it makes life easier,” said Sharon.
“That’s why things have been easier for us because we understand each other and have the same interests,” added Duane.
