Meet Midrand’s afro-soul artist
MIDRAND - Meet Midrand's new Afro-Soul musician Boichoko Qwabe, known as Choko.
The Bloemfontein-born musician said she never knew she was that good of a singer.
“I thought I was just someone with a good voice, but as I grew up I noticed the reaction of the crowd whenever I sang; they all thought I was very good,” said Choko. She sung at church and in choirs throughout school, as well as done backing vocals for many people including Zonke and has started writing her own songs.”
She was also a member of the Bloemfontein Ensemble Gospel Group that reached the semi-finals of the Gospel Stars in 2005. Choko is looking forward to a great future in the music industry. She hopes to travel and perform within South Africa before taking her love for music worldwide.
Besides music, Choko said she is passionate about the welfare of women and children. “I am making plans to get involved in community work and also making free performances for non-profit organisations that help women and children.
Speaking of young people, Choko said, ‘I would advise any young person interested in music to persevere, write their own music and get in touch with people who can assist with growing their music.”
Choko is inspired by artists such as Maleh, Thandiswa Mazwai and Judith Sephuma. Choko’s debut album, Lerato, is now available on i-Tunes.
