Summerhill learners improve comprehension through new book club
Reading for meaning and understanding is becoming a burning issue for most schools, but Summerhill's Joy of Learning programme has birthed a book club to ensure Summerhill learners don’t have to face such a challenge.
To revive the concept of reading for meaning, the Joy of Learning created a book club for learners at Summerhill College.
Joy of Learning is a support centre at the school where a group of teachers assist learners who have challenges academically, whether it’s with single subjects or multiple. The book club aims to assist learners with finding their passion for reading, building their confidence through reading for an audience.
In the book club, the idea is that learners will take a book they have been reading, analyse it, and discuss it with the rest of the book club members.

Pushed by the realisation that some learners cannot read for meaning, the Joy of Learning decided to strengthen their core beliefs of wanting each and every learner to prosper. Learners are encouraged to become a part of the book club, so that they can express some of the challenges they face with their academic subjects.

Two of the five learners who are members of the club spoke about what opening the book club was like for them and explained how it feels to see it come alive. Grade 9 learners Sophiya Shiekh and Gabisile Zikhali explained why they became a part of a book club. “I’ve always wanted to be a part of a book club,” said Gabisile, “because I’ve been looking forward to hearing the different perspectives that people have on certain topics.”

“I personally love books and I love reading,” added Shiekh. “As somebody who is passionate about reading, and has experienced the benefits of it, it helps with taking off the stress and helps boost my marks.”
