George Mhaule Primary School received 50 much-needed school desks last week. This follows after it had raised concerns regarding the shortage of desks and the challenges it had in classrooms.

The desks were handed over by Nkambeni Safari Camp, in partnership with Grand Circle Foundation. George Mhaule is a government school in the Numbi area.

Chris Schalkwyk, of Nkambeni Safari Camp and Mdluli Safari Lodge, said they had raised funds for desks through the foundation. “It is an American tour operator company. The 10 per cent made from people who use the company is donated to those in need in countries in which they travel,” he explained.

Grand Circle’s aim is to make a difference in the countries visited. This is not the first contribution that the camp and foundation have made to the school. They have donated a shelter used for assembly and events, a JoJo tank and chairs. They have paved the school grounds. Lucas Mashabane, George Mhaule principal, said they did not have enough desks for all their pupils.

“Each learner will now be able to sit on a chair and use a desk without any challenges. This donation adds to what we already have. It is what we needed as we did not have enough. It is an honour for us to receive this. They previously donated chairs and now they added the desks.”

Mashabane said he would like to continue the strong relationship with Grand Circle Foundation and Nkambeni Safari Camp.

“The bond must not be broken. Grand Circle Foundation, thank you very much for the donation. We know that the champion of the initiative is Nkambeni Safari, we appreciate the support that we receive from it,” he said.

Mashabane added the learners are happy to have received the desks and they will make a great impact on learning.
