Gun man out on bail

Mokoena, a taxi owner appeared at the Kabokweni Magistrate's Court for his bail application and was charged with two counts of murder and attempted murder.

A week after three women were shot near Endumbeni bar in Kanyamazane, the accused, Wandile Sylvester Mokoena was released on bail yesterday.

The acting investigating officer, Sgt Ben Nkambule opposed the application on the basis that the case is still fresh and that the deceased are not yet buried. He stated that the release of the accused may disturb the investigation and explained where the incident took place.

However, the defence lawyer argued that Mokoena be granted bail because he handed himself over to the police and he was willing to hand over his passport to the investigating officer.

The magistrate, Musa Mabunda said, “The facts of the matter had not been placed fully before the court, however the law allows that maybe it is in the interest of justice to do so. There are minor children in the family of the applicant and his six employees and he runs a business. Therefore, he will be granted bail.”

Mokoena was granted R1500,00 bail and  will appear in court on August 23.
