Arrested hijackers will appear in court

The appearance follows a police chase on Saturday after the suspects hijacked a black Volkswagen Golf at Mattaffin near Mbombela.

The four suspects are expected to appear at the Kanyamazane Magistrate’s Court today facing charges of hijacking, attempted murder, unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition.

The Nelspruit Flying Squad gave chase after the suspects from Nelspruit until Kanyamazane where the suspects opened fire at the police and they ( police ) were compelled to retaliate. However, no one was injured.

The Flying Squad members managed though to corner and arrest the four suspects as well as recovering two firearms – one in their possession and the other retrieved from the bushes.

A profiling of the villains is underway to check their involvement in other criminal activities and the firearms will be sent for ballistic testing as well for further investigation.

The police are currently in the process of sorting a fifth suspect who fled with the hijacked vehicle.
