Warmer weather increases snake encounters in Mpumalanga

Simple garden precautions and knowing the critical dos and don'ts of snakebite treatment can keep your household safe this summer.

With temperatures climbing, the Mpumalanga Tourism and Parks Agency (MTPA) warns residents to remain vigilant for reptiles.

Warmer weather provides ideal conditions for increased snake activity, raising the likelihood of encounters in residential gardens, yards and outdoor spaces.

The MTPA spokesperson, Simphiwe Shungube, said while seeing a snake near a home can be alarming, the agency reminds the public that these reptiles play a vital, natural role in maintaining the region’s ecological balance.

They should always be treated with caution and respect rather than hostility.

Precautionary measures to avoid encounters

Here are recommended safety precautions to ensure community safety and protect local wildlife:

• Never approach, provoke, or attempt to kill a snake.
• Most snakebites occur when people try to catch or harm the animal.
• Keep yards tidy by removing piles of rubble, building materials, garden refuse, and tall grass that offer ideal hiding spots for snakes.
• Exercise extreme caution when walking through tall grass, walking pets, or working in outdoor areas, particularly in the early morning and late afternoon.

Emergency response to snakebites

In the unfortunate event of a snakebite, time is critical. Seek immediate medical attention by heading to the nearest hospital or medical facility. Here is further advice:

• Do not attempt to cut the wound.
• Do not try to suck out the venom.
• Do not apply a tourniquet, as these outdated methods can cause severe tissue damage and worsen the situation.

For snake removals or emergencies anywhere in Mpumalanga, residents can contact MTPA’s snake handler, Chris Hobkirk, directly at 082 372 3350.
