54-year old man arrested for repeatedly raping teen
The victim's twin sister has been aware of what was happening to her, but was also scared to tell their grandmother.
BARBERTON – A 54-year-old man was arrested last week Thursday for allegedly raping a 15-year-old girl who lives nearby his home and is expected to appear in court on March 25.
MEC for Community Safety, Security and Liaison, Gabisile Shabalala visited the victim’s home. There she interacted with the social worker assigned to the victim’s case and the victim’s family.It is alleged that the man started raping the girl last year. The girl has kept quiet about it as the man has been offering her money and has threatened to kill her if she would dare to mention this to anybody.

The victim’s twin sister has been aware of what was happening to her, but was also scared to mention it to her grandmother. She later on grew conscious to tell their grandmother on what has been happening to her twin sister.
“I was not aware of the situation not until her twin sister mentioned that the underwear I found filled with blood, was not not menstrual blood. From there she opened up to me and told me about those occasions,” said the victim’s grandmother.
Filled with great sadness, Gogo Mhlongo* also mentioned that she thinks the man undermined her as a guardian to her grandchild. “I am just old, I hardly notice anything. Maybe that is why he saw an opportunity and I am scared for my grandchildren’s lives,” she concluded.

MEC for Social Development, Thandi Shongwe also intervened on the matter to help move the twin sisters to a place of safety.
