Men urged to stop abuse

Men and women of change urged police officials to educate the public about gender based violence.

MBOMBELA – “The real struggle for democracy was fought by women.”

This is according to Mr Kevin Pillay, the national and provincial Crime Prevention Forum chairperson, during Nelspruit SAPS’ sensitising network session of women and men for change aimed at encouraging police officials to fight and educate the public about gender-based violence, this week.

In his address Pillay said that this was due to the fact that in the past it was believed that a woman’s place was in the kitchen.

“Abuse against women still continues and we take them for granted,” he added.

Pillay also encouraged officials to show their women affection on a daily basis instead of only on Valentine’s Day.

He indicated that gender-based violence doesn’t only affect the victim but children also which results in them performing badly at school.

“It’s high time that we treat women the way they want to be treated. Lets give our women the necessary attention they deserve,” said Pillay.

“God has entrusted men to take care of women and protect them,” said.

Past Dimakatso Mbatha. She added that women felt helpless when they were being abused by the same person meant to protect her.

“Give women the attention that they need.”

Lt Col Khethiwe Madike said that couple should share everything and as a result men won’t have time to look at other’s wives.

She also requested that men should share house chores instead of expecting their wives to be obliged to do them alone.

“If we take these things into consideration we won’t have abuse.”
