Standard of meat industry improving
The provincial abattoir rating scheme is a voluntary scheme that is aimed at ensuring a competitive and complaint abattoir sector.
The standard of the meat industry in the province is improving because of the support it receives from government.
This is according to the MEC for agriculture, Ms Violet Siwela, during the third Abattoir Rating Scheme Awards ceremony held at the Lowveld Agricultural college recently.
She added that the aim of the awards was to encourage farmers to improve and compete among themselves.
“The provincial abattoir rating scheme is a voluntary scheme that is aimed at ensuring a competitive and complaint abattoir sector. It is done through our veterinary public health officials’ audit of abattoirs and will result in the preference of our products by our major trading partners,” said Siwela.
Speaking to Mpumalanga Mirror, Mr Oratile Magano from Afgri poultry daybreak, said amid them receiving a silver rating is an indication that they are a step closer to achieving the gold rating in the next awards.
He added that the accolade showed their compliance with the meat safety act and the hygiene standards.
