Kruger United FC’s difficult start to life in the Betway Premiership continued after a heavy 4-0 defeat to Orlando Pirates at Mbombela Stadium on Tuesday night, September 1.

The home side was punished early when Ghampani Lungu opened the scoring in the fourth minute.

Orlando Pirates continued to dominate and doubled their advantage through Boitumelo Radiopane in the 54th minute before Yanela Mbuthuma struck twice in the 79th and 92nd minutes to complete a convincing victory for the Buccaneers.

Coaches react after tough battle

After the match, Kruger United coach Abraham Mongoya admitted that the result was difficult to accept but praised his players for their effort.

“It was a tough game, there were tough moments and it is a bitter pill to swallow. Despite the loss, I have to give credit to the team for playing well and showing resilience throughout the match,’ said Mongoya.

Orlando Pirates coach Abdeslam Ouaddou also acknowledged the challenge posed by Kruger United.

“Kruger United really gave us a hard time. The way they were playing suffocated us, but I am glad that, in the end, we came out victorious,” said Ouaddou.

Focus shifts to Mpumalanga Derby

The defeat leaves Kruger United rooted to the bottom of the Betway Premiership standings in 16th place with just one point.

The team will now turn its attention to the Mpumalanga derby against TS Galaxy at Mbombela Stadium on Sunday, September 13.
