Nine dead and 15 injured

Five people burned to death on Saturday afternoon in a head-on collision involving an Isuzu bakkie and a Toyota Quantum on the fast becoming notorious Mzinti road, just past Elangeni Lodge.

MZINTI – Five people burned to death on Saturday afternoon in a head-on collision involving an Isuzu bakkie and a Toyota Quantum on the fast becoming notorious Mzinti road, just past Elangeni Lodge.

Seven people were confirmed death at the accident scene, 17 people were hospitalised with critical injures between two hospitals, Tonga and Shongwe Mission, an additional two people died in hospital.

It is alleged that one of the Isuzu’s tyre ruptured and caused the van to loose control resulting in it colliding with the Quantum which was traveling on the opposite direction towards Tonga.

The Nkomazi municipality is planning to hold a mass memorial service on Thursday, and has agreed to assist all the affected families with funeral arrangements.
