KWA-MHLANGA – Mpumalanga Community Safety, Security and Liaison MEC, Mr Vusi Shongwe applauded Kwa-Mhlanga police for their success in arresting a suspect, following a cellphone tip off.
The arrest of the suspect comes after Shongwe received a call from a member of the community informing him about a suspected stolen vehicle which was hidden at Sheldon Township after being chased by a helicopter.
Shongwe acted promptly by alerting the cluster commander of the local police, who released police for the search of the car which was found and its driver arrested. The driver now faces charges of possession of stolen vehicle.
He briely appeared in KwaMhlanga Magistrate’s Court , where he was remanded in custody until his next court appeareance at the Pretoria North for car hijacking.
This breakthrough follows the Shongwe’s decision of giving his cellphone numbers to the public to report any criminality, including corruption that occurs within the public sector.
“This will go a long way if communities commit themselves to work with us to fight crime. It is everyone’s responsibility to fight crime as it affects all residents. We urge other community members to report any criminal activities happening in their areas so that police could be able to apprehend those involved,” said Shongwe.
