NELSPRUIT – Chanting songs of freedom and singing praise, hundreds of people celebrated Nelson Mandela’s life during a memorial service held at Mbombela Stadium. Attended by political and religious leaders and the general public, the service was a celebration of the great man’s life.
The premier, Mr David Mabuza comforted the mourning crowd saying that Madiba’s spirit would always live in their hearts as they remembered the sacrifices he made through which the nation gained freedom.
“No grave will ever be large enough to silence uTata, he will always communicate with us and we will listen to him and continue to walk in his footsteps, continuing his long walk to freedom.”
Mabuza added that the whole nation was free from the shackles of apartheid because of the former president’s selflessness and humility.
“We have learnt all the good lessons you have taught us and your sacrifices will never be in vain. Hamba kahle and give our regards to the other fallen heroes of the struggle,” he concluded.
South African Idol Musa Sukwene and his runner-up, Brenden Ledwaba, joined by gospel artists such as Donny and Masibuyele kuJehova, entertained the crowd.
