Premier urges citizens to fight HIV/Aids pandemic

It's known that when talking about Aids, it is normally a depressing issue, especially on World Aids Day.

KABOKWENI – This province has the second highest number of people ( after

KwaZulu-Natal ) who live with HIV/Aids.

Speaking during the third sitting of the Mpumalanga Aids Council (Mpac) that was held at KaMhlushwa Community Hall , the provincial chairperson of the council, the premier Mr David Mabuza, urged all citizens to play a role in fighting the disease.

Women of different churches and organisations in the area gathered at the local Methodist Church and asked God to heal the sick.

It’s known that when talking about Aids, it is normally a depressing issue, especially on World Aids Day.

Not so long ago, one of this newspaper’s sister publications, Mpumalanga Mirror, interacted with different citizens in the area, most of them young people, who expressed different opinions on teaching people about Aids as most indicated that more needed to be done to win this battle.

Fikile Shungube (17) said in order for the government to win this battle, activities on Aids must be conducted every month.

“Since December is here, you tune into your radio, television or read newspapers, you will find a lot of articles and programmes that teach about HIV/Aids, but after that, it’s quiet.

“Young people no longer behave. If we look at the statistics or the

number of young girls who fall pregnant and end up dropping out of school, it’s

very shocking.

“This means they are not using condoms which also puts them at high risk of contracting HIV/Aids,” she concluded.

At this gathering, speakers from various institutions shared the stage and one of them, Ms Phumla Maluka, said, “We need to unite and fight this scourge that is killing people, but we are not going to win this battle alone, we need God on our side
