Rapists sentenced to life

"I have never in my whole career had a case like this in court."

NELSPRUIT – “I have never in my whole career had a case like this in court.” These were the words of magistrate Mr Roelf Smith when he handed down judgement on two men who had raped a woman last year.
Sibussiso William Nkuna (28) and Jippy Lucky Mashele (27) were found guilty of raping a 22-year-old woman and sentenced each to two life terms on Wednesday.

The crime occurred on March 9, 2012 in Naas. Smith said in court that the young woman had gone out that night to relax and enjoy herself at a tavern. He said the men had grabbed her outside the toilets and threatened her with a knife.

They then forced the victim to accompany them to their house where they repeatedly raped and sodomised her. The woman managed to escape the next morning and reported the rape to the police.
Smith said the sentence was also a clear message to society that this behaviour would not be tolerated.
