Committee recommends McBride appointment

MBOMBELA – The portfolio committee on Police was today (January 30)  briefed by the Minister of Police Mr Nathi Mthethwa on the nomination of, Mr Robert McBride, as the Executive Director of the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID).

 The committee has indicated that it is satisfied with the process followed and is confident that McBride is adequately skilled and as a result he is most suitable person to deliver on the mandate of IPID.

“The procedure followed in nominating and appointing Mr McBride included short-listing of six candidates from the 49 applicants. The committee was further informed by the Minister that the nomination and appointment of Mr McBride was conducted in accordance with Chapter 2, section 6.1 of IPID Act, which states that the Minister must nominate a suitably qualified person for appointment to the Office of Executive Director to head the Directorate,” reads the statement from the committee.

The statement further reads that: “Therefore, the committee has accepted the nomination of Mr McBride and will recommend his appointment to the National Assembly.”

The Committee wishes him the best in executing his mandate of ensuring that the South African Police Service carries out its duties as per the prescripts of the Constitution.
