Team ready to fight fires

Mpumalanga is known as a rich province when it comes to agriculture.

As part of ensuring that veld fires don’t destroy vegetation, the Working on Fire (WoF) team is preparing for the fire season from May to October, by slashing vegetation that can fuel unwanted veld fires which affects human lives.

The general manager in the province for WoF, Mr Martin Bolton, indicated they would work together with the various stakeholders to ensure they control unwanted veld fires. This publication learnt that some of the organisations that will take part include the Mpumalanga Tourism and Parks Agency (MTPA), private landowners and the department of agriculture, forestry and fisheries.

“We will work hard to fight fires during the coming fire season. We encourage all our staff to keep on committing themselves by serving their communities,” he said. He urged communities to attend community fire-awareness events in their areas to learn more about the danger of veld fires and how to prevent them.
