“Promoting entrepreneurship and empowering woman in developing countries such as ours, is critical in the fight against the triple challenges, poverty, unemployment and inequality.”

This is according to NYDA’s, Mr April Motloung during a three-day young women seminar which was held over the weekend. Motloung indicated that: “My hope is that this summit has empowered you with information in order to be able to make informed decisions for future sustainable livelihoods and you have fully acquitted yourself on how important a woman is in changing the lives of the whole community for a better future.

He added that being familiar with the concept of woman empowerment, entrepreneurship and business management will enable them (participants) as a young woman to participate in the mean stream economy.

The aim of the event motivate young women to participate in government’s development initiatives among other things. Speaking to this publication one of the attendees of the seminar, Ms Reshoketsoe Nonyane said that the event was both transforming and reviving which as a result brought a sense of self-confidence.Another attendee, Ms Khulufelo Mogane echoed the same sentiments as Nyonane regarding the event. She also indicated that the seminar was both transforming and life changing and as a result she learnt a lot.

“I will surely implement every lesson that I have learnt.” One of the speakers at the event Mr Maropene Ramokgopa said that: “Since the advent of democracy 20 years ago, our government has worked tirelessly to develop and implemented plans to try and create a balance and to bridge a gap that has always existed between men and women, and to bring about redress.”

He added that despite all the great efforts that the government has made there were still hiccups when it comes to the empowerment and development of women.

“Faced with socio-economic challenges many young women still cannot participate in the mainstream economy as many of them are unemployed or unemployable for a number of reasons – some have had to drop out of school due to pregnancy while in other parts of the country young women are married off to older people in the practice known as ukuthwala, and end up having to take wife, often being forced to neglect their studies,”he said.
