Residents fear a deluge

Residenst fear for their lives as leaking water pipes are left un- attended.

KANYAMAZANE – The community of Section 3 in Ward 19 fear the possibility that water pipes could burst following a continuous leakage of overhead pipelines.

The residents say the water has been leaking for almost three weeks now and attempts to get help from Sembcorp Silulumanzi at KaNyamazane have thus far proved fruitless. “The leaks started slowly, but have spread to different joints since the 18th of this month.

We reported the matter to Silulumanzi both here and in town, but no one seems to be taking the matter seriously and no one bothers to tell us why the pipe has not fixed,” said one of the residents, Mr Harris Gumede.

He added that the community lives in fear of what could happen to their homes and children if the pipes continued to leak or burst.
According to Gumede, the pipes supply six reservoirs around KaNyamazane.

Municipal spokesman, Mr Joseph Ngala promised to contact Silulumanzi and the Bushbuckridge Water Board to find out who owned the pipes and to ascertain whose responsibility it was to fix them.

Silulumanzi’s spokesman, Mr Richmond Jele mentioned that some pipes around KaNyamazane and Pienaar were not managed by his company, but by the Bushbuckridge Water Board.

A media enquiry was sent to both organisations and the municipality, however, at the time of going to print, none of them had replied to who was supposed to maintain the pipelines.
