Sasol recently hosted its 20th annual Grade 12 Merit Award ceremony to recognise and reward learners who had passed their last 2014 matric examination with three or more distinctions.
Sasol recently hosted its 20th annual Grade 12 Merit Award ceremony to recognise and reward learners who had passed their last 2014 matric examination with three or more distinctions.
The Sasol annual Grade 12 Merit Award ceremony is initiative in support of the objectives of Government’s National Development Plan (NDP) which aims to uplift communities.
The day saw 64 learners from schools around the Govan Mbeki Municipality being awarded with Sasol Grade 12 Merit Award certificates and cash prizes for their outstanding marks received from their 2014 matric exams.
A total of 23 of them obtained three distinctions each , 14 achieved four distinctions, ten achieved five distinctions , seven achieved six whilst nine learner achieved seven distinctions.Only one learner achieved an overwhelming of nine distinctions.Each learner received R15 000 to be used towards their registration fees at a tertiary institution of their own choice.
“For the first time, Sasol also recognised 15 learners from Quintile one to three graded non- fees schools. The company also sponsored educational programmes for the best achievement in Mathematics and Physical Science,” explained Alex Anderson, head of Group Media Relations.
The event also saw a number of educators being acknowledged for their outstanding contribution to the advancement of education particularly in the areas of Maths and Science.
Nonetheless the company also acknowledged schools which showed a significant improvement in their matric pass rate as compared with the previus year’s results.
The schools are Vukuqhakaze Secondary School whose pass rate has increased from the 33 % received in 2013 to 62.5%, K.I Twala Secondary School which improved from a 66,2 % to a whooping 81.8%.
Chief Ampie Mayisa Secondary School also improved 58% to 71% pass rate. Maureen Mboshane, the vice president of Public and Regulatory Affairs, Secunda Chemicals Operations said Sasol is proud to play a role in facilitating access to education to aspiring learners in the area.
“Sasol has awarded nearly 1, 468 bursaries to aspiring students in Secunda over the past 10 years. This initiative and many more ,shows Sasol’s commitment to recognising and rewarding excellence among learners.
Sasol is also committed to continue to support the Department of Education, teachers and learners in their efforts to produce future leaders of this country”, said Mboshane.
Mboshane also encouraged this year’s Grade 12 learners to utilise the resources at their disposal such as the facilities that Sasol has made available through the Osizweni Education Development Centre, which is a centre for the advancement of quality education particularly Maths and Science.
Learners were also urged to utilise Sasol’s employees for educational support through the company’s employee volunteerism programmes like the Matric Revision programme and Orphans and Vulnerable Children tutoring programme.
