Footbridge for leaners introduced

KWAGGAFONTEIN – The province united with one voice to celebrate and commemorate Freedom Day at the Thembisile Hani Municipality on Monday.
The celebrations were warmed up when three fully furnished houses were handed over to three families. The MEC for culture, sports, and recreation, Norah Mahlangu Mabena, took to the podium to condemn the xenophobic attacks which had afflicted South Africa lately.
“I hurt when I see people killing one another for no reason. There is seriously no reason to condone our actions toward our fellow Africans.
We are celebrating Freedom Day today, the same freedom which we achieved with the help of the same people we are slaughtering today. It really makes no sense at all. They were there for us when we needed them, now that we have acquired the freedom, we are turning against them,” said the disheartened Mahlangu Mabena.
The MEC for education, Reginah Mhaule, together with MEC for social development, Nomsa Mtshweni and the MEC for public works, Dum’sile Nhlengethwa, Mahlangu Mabena, introduced the new footbridge to the community.
“I remember I was here a couple of years ago, four children had drowned after attempting to cross the bridge.
I promised the community that as government, we would ensure that a footbridge is built to curb such incidents. It gives me great pleasure today to hand over the bridge to the community. The children will now cross safely on their way to school.”
The MEC also spoke fiercely against the latest plague of vandalising statues in the country. “What are we going to tell our upcoming generations if we are destroying our very own history? Let us not be misled by certain individuals, if one is not happy with the statues, let’s follow the right procedure and report it.
Then we all reach a certain agreement. Vandalising statues is out of the question.”
School packs and groceries were also given to certain families during the event. Performances on a lighter and celebratory note were offered by the local cultural group, Dikwankweng, and Malini performed their new song against xenophobia.
