KANYAMAZANE – With the winter months already approaching, two Mozambican families consisting of nine members, including a two-year-old, were left homeless after the house they had been renting for years was burnt to ashes.
This happened over the weekend while they were all sleeping in the house. It is suspected that the fire started outside where they kept sofas and other items which were used in the family business. The KaNyamazane Fire Brigade was called to the scene, but allegedly had to leave as its tankers ran out of water. It was further alleged that the water tankers had to drive all the way to Mbombela to get water as there was none at KaNyamazane. During this time the whole house was gutted.
“We lost everything including clothes, food, school uniforms for the kids, and the car that was parked in the yard, were all burnt to ashes,” explained Mr Julia Ntibane. According to him, he does not suspect that it was a xenophobic attack as the community treated them like family since their arrival five years ago, to join his brother, Mr Richard Jeyvignug, who had been living there for a long time.
KaNyamazane police have also opened an inquest on this matter.
