Disaster Victims benefit RDP’s

A family of six who suffered from a heavy storm that blown away their house in 2012 and they have been living in a mud house the past 3 years, has recently been handed over with a newly fully furnished low cost house by the Department of Human Settlement in Bushbuckridge Municipality.

BUSHBUCKRIDGE-The handover came a day before President Jacob Zuma visits to assess water and sanitation delivery at the municipality.

Mr Piet Sibuyi (58), his wife, two children and two grandchildren is one of the beneficiaries who benefited through the delivery of Emergency Housing Assistance and Rural Development Programmes valued at over R10 million.

MEC for Human Settlement, Ms Violet Siwela stated the new house comes because of the intervention by government to improve communities. “I am happy today that finally the people who were affected by the 2013/14 rainstorms were relieved by receiving their new and sustainable houses. These beneficiaries form part of the 55 victims who were left homeless during that time”, said Siwela.

She continue saying the department has also provided shelter to at least 42 other households through the Rural Development Programme. “The department is currently delivering nearly 700 housing units in the municipality through People’s Housing Programme (PHP), rural, disaster and military veterans, of which 550 of them have since been completed”, said Siwela.

She added their policy dictates that eligible beneficiaries may satisfy the qualifying criteria and the department has taken a conscious position to prioritize mainly the elderly, people with disability and child-headed households.

Mr Sibuyi appreciated the gift of a shelter from the department, and he stated they are all unemployed and depends on the grant to chase hunger. “The walls in our mud house cracked and we could even see the outside while we’re sleeping. For now we thank that we are blessed with a new house with access to water and electricity”, he said.

The hand over was done by the MEC for Human Settlement, Ms Violet Siwela and Mayor of Bushbuckridge, Clr Renius
