Barberton Mines launches career expo for local youth
Interactive VR simulations and bursaries offer high school learners pathways into technical industries.
Barberton Mines has partnered with Ehlanzeni TVET College and Forek Institute of Technology to address critical technical skills shortages in the mining sector.
On August 14, the career awareness expo introduced high school learners to modern, sustainable career opportunities in geology, technology, engineering and metallurgy to strengthen the future talent pipeline.

Virtual reality simulations and bursaries
Learners explored Barberton Mines’ pre-tertiary development and external bursary programmes, which support young people pursuing tertiary education in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.
Targeting thousands of learners in grades 10 to 12 from surrounding communities, the multi-day exhibition featured interactive virtual reality (VR) underground simulations, direct engagement with engineering professionals and one-on-one career counselling.

Broader career opportunities
Highlights of the expo included:
• immersive technology hubs where learners used VR stations to experience underground mining operations in a safe and interactive environment;
• technical skills guidance from industry experts in geology, digital mining, engineering, metallurgy and environmental science; and
• exposure to career opportunities beyond mining, including sustainable agriculture, information and communication technology, and community healthcare.

Barberton Mines administration and finance manager Nomthandazo Dlamini said the expo forms part of the mining operation’s commitment to youth development, encouraging learners to make informed decisions about their education.
“We are investing heavily in community youth development to move past historical dependencies. By bringing cutting-edge mining technologies directly to these learners, we unlock potential and offer sustainable livelihoods,” said Dlamini.
