MBOMBELA – A 30-year-old woman was killed after she was struck by lightning during the storm that hit the city on Thursday afternoon.

The tragic incident occurred at Friedenheim, a farming operation owned and run by the Timbali Technology Incubator.

According to spokesperson for Timbali, Ms Busisiwe Mkhize, the deceased was a seasonal farmer who worked mostly in the nursery on the farm.

“Siphiwe was working in the field when there was a flash lightning and she collapsed,” said Mkhize.

She added that ER24 was contacted and when the paramedics arrived they resuscitated the woman before rushing her to Mediclinic Nelspruit and admitted to ICU where she later died.

“She had only been with us for a year, but she was a valued and loved member of the Timbali family,” says Busisiwe. “Our hearts go out to her family and children.”

Busisiwe says that trauma counselling has been made available for the Timbali staff.
