Parents want school’s roof repaired

Currently the grade four and five children attend classes twice a week as they have to share classrooms.

MATSULU – Teaching and learning has been put on halt at Funindlela Primary School. This is after community members and parents of schoolchildren decided to close it down.
They were protesting against the department of education’s failed promises to fix the school’s roof, which was damaged in last year’s storm.

Parents gathered at the school since last Friday, singing political songs and burning tyres as they blocked the entrance to the school.
This action was taken after parents handed a letter to the Nkululeko Circuit with a 14-day notice in which the circuit failed to respond within the given time.
Chairperson of the school governing body, Mr Timothy Mkhatshwa said,

“The parents are tired of the department’s delays. They ignored all the letters that were sent to them. And on top of everything, they ignored our notice, and that’s the reason why parents are taking action since they were not heard.
“Primary school pupils cannot attend lessons like university students. The situation is very bad now, something needs to be done. The department needs to send delegates to attend to this matter as soon as possible.”

Ward 28 councillor, Mr Sabelo Masuku, along with his fellow ANC members went and requested corrugated iron from local businesses in a bid to fix the roof for learning to proceed.
The departmental spokeperson, Mr Gerald Sambo said a contractor has been appointed and will start working on site in March.
