School safety campaign yields positive results

KANYAMAZANE – Since the local police started the school safety campaign, which includes random searches, they have been yielding positive results.
This was proven on Thursday when the police unexpectedly visited Lekazi Central and searched for drugs.
The educators and their headmaster were left in shock after a number of learners, predominantly boys, were found in possession of cigarettes and dagga.
The spokesperson for the local police, WO Andries Skwambane, said that during the raid, they were informed of a grade 12 learner making extra money by selling cigarettes at school, but unfortunately when they rushed to his classroom, he was nowhere to be found.
“We suspect that someone tipped him off about the random search. We did, however, find another learner selling cigarettes and the others in possession of dagga.
They were arrested and later released under the supervision of their parents. We also warned them about such activities, because at the end of the day, they end up with a criminal records, as what they are doing is illegal,” he explained.
Skwambane further said that they would continue to work tirelessly to ensure that schools are not used as locations for the selling illegal substances.
This publication learnt that the campaign is not only focusing on high schools, even primary schools are part of the campaign, as they had previously visited Sitintile and Lekazi primary schools.

Parents were urged to work with police in checking their children’s school bags and books to ensure that they do not carry dangerous weapons.
