Police urge boys and men to speak out about abuse

Police are expected to pay regular visits to schools in the surrounding area, encouraging pupils to speak out when they are sexually abused.

KHUMBULA TRUST – Police are expected to pay regular visits to schools in the surrounding area, encouraging pupils to speak out when they are sexually abused.

This comes after the realisation that young boys were falling victim to sexual abuse, specifically sodomy.

This publication discovered that not so long ago, a group of pupils of six and seven years, were sodomised by their schoolmates outside the school premises on their way home.

In protecting the identity of the victims, the name of the school cannot be revealed.

Thankfully one of the victims blew the whistle and told a teacher, who did not hesitate to alert the police and social workers.

They then intervened and provided counselling to the victims.
Spokesperson for the KaBokweni Police Station, Capt Shirley Ngomane said in most cases men do not open cases.

“We still have a long way to go when it comes to assisting men in speaking out when they are abused.

In most cases, we focus more on girls, but this time around, we want to do things differently.

We are going to focus more on boys so that they can be bold enough to report when they are abused.

“When they turn a blind eye on such incidents, the perpetrators take advantage and continue abusing others.

Men sometimes don’t speak out or open cases because they think they will be the laughing stock at the police station, which is not true,” said Ngomane.
