With only few days left before the local government elections, thousands of smartcard and green bar-coded IDs are lying uncollected at home affairs offices across the country.

The minister of home affairs, Mr Malusi Gigaba, announced that his department would work extra hours to make sure that those who needed their documents before the August 3 elections would obtain them without any hassles. “In preparation for the elections we have arrangements in place to ensure certain services are extended beyond the normal working hours,” he said.

Its offices, across the country, will be open on Saturday from 08:30 to 17:00, on Monday from 08:30 to 18:00, on Tuesday from 08:30 to 18:00 and on Wednesday from 07:00 to 19:00.
