Nepotism in housing assignments investigated

“As a municipality, we are comfortable about everything. The situation is normal and from our side, there were no officials that were implicated in any allegations of manipulating the list of beneficiaries,"

TEKWANE NORTH – An investigation is underway into an official from the department of human settlements. He is accused of causing chaos which led to a scuffle over 500 housing units delivered by the MEC, Mr Speedy Mashilo, last year December.

Mpumalanga News learnt that the official, whose identity cannot be revealed at this stage but is known to this newspaper, landed in hot water after he was accused by residents that he benefitted his family members by adding them onto the list of beneficiaries.

Previously, the department confirmed that they were aware of the allegations against the official and stated that an investigation was established to determine the basis of those allegations.

The spokesperson for the department, Mr Freddy Ngobe, merely stated that they were still busy with investigations. “There is nothing much I can say at this stage about this matter. Hopefully we will give you feedback by the end of this month,” said Ngobe.

Meanwhile, the spokesperson of the City of Mbombela Local Municipality, Mr Joseph Ngala said, “As a municipality, we are comfortable about everything. The situation is normal and from our side, there were no officials that were implicated in any allegations of manipulating the list of beneficiaries.

As a municipality, we gave all the beneficiaries their title deeds. “We are happy the way the law enforcement agencies resolved this matter, but if there are those who want to report something, they must report it to the municipality.”
