Matsulu community march against crime

Hundreds of Matsulu residents took to the streets early on Thursday morning to deliver a memorandum against the increase of crime, corruption, gangsterism and the abuse of drugs and other substances such as nyaope in the area.

The fed-up community are marching to the local police station to hand over a memorandum to the provincial commissioner.

Chris Mashele, the regional secretary of the South African National Civic Organisation (Sanco) said crime-related issues are affecting the community. “We demand the department to upgrade the local police station from a Captain’s rank to that of Colonel. We need more police visibility, we are ready to accompany police to drug hot-spots,” said Mashele.

This is the second march in the area as last week the entire town came to a standstill as community members demanded issues of crime to be addressed. It is alleged that a body was found last month near the local stadium.
