SASSA reviews beneficiaries
Most of these cases were received during the payment monitoring process, where some of the recipients did not get social grants due to failure to review
The South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) beseeches all social-grant beneficiaries not to ignore letters calling them for reviews. The aim is to encourage beneficiaries who received notices to visit their nearest Sassa offices. This will avoid the suspension of grants without their knowledge.
This process is conducted throughout the payment circle. The notifications are being sent using registered post based on the information provided by applicants.
It is a legislative mandate which requires social grants beneficiaries to comply. Sassa issues a letter of intent to suspend the grant after 90 days. Beneficiaries must note that the suspension of a social grant happens after six months of not complying with the two letters.

The social grant review process is implemented following the legislated regulations of the Social Assistance Act (2004). This legislation also governs matters pertaining to beneficiaries who fail to provide all required information for social-grant reviews.
Every recipient must undergo a review to determine the individual’s eligibility at any time when beneficiaries financial and health circumstances change.Sassa is doing it to avoid fraud and corruption in the social grants system, check the life certifications and to determine whether the financial and health circumstances of social-grant beneficiaries have not changed.
Temporary disability grants are the only ones that are not reviewed as they have expiry dates dependent on medical examinations. A beneficiary may reapply for this type of grant.
