Police arrest 40 illegal miners

A total of 40 illegal miners aged between 17 and 43 years were arrested during a disruptive operation at Machadodorp Old Shaft Gold Mine, yesterday.

This happened during a joint operation of the Hawks, Middelburg Cluster detectives, K9 Unit and visible policing.

Most of them are illegal immigrants. They will all appear in the Watervalboven Magistrate’s Court today on charges of illegal mining, trespassing and contravening the
Immigration Act.

Police investigations still continue.
