DA marches for speedy delivery of quality basic services in Govan Mbeki Municipality

The DA handed over a memorandum to the municipal manger after the embattled municipality failed to manage its water account.

Today, the Democratic Alliance (DA) marched to hand over a memorandum to Govan Mbeki Municipal Manager, Mr Simon Felani Mndebele, calling on him to tackle the financial crisis in the municipality that has led to a disrupted water and electricity supply.

Due to the municipality’s inability to effectively manage its water account, Rand Water has been sporadically throttling the water supply to residents. During May and November 2018 the entity throttled the supply by 40% and 20% respectively.

According to the party’s premier candidate, Jane Sithole, the failure of the Municipality to pay Eskom and Rand Water for their services is a result of the systematic failures of the municipality to implement revenue generation and collection systems in an effective manner.

“Water is a basic human right and by not protecting this right and ensuring that all residents have constant access to clean and safe water, the ANC is killing the residents of Govan Mbeki municipality,” she said.

In order to restore the dignity and safeguard the health of Govan Mbeki residents, the DA has tabled the following demands;

  • That the municipal manager tackle the financial crisis head-on and sticks to contractual agreements with Eskom and Rand Water;
  • That water is provided to all of the residents who do not currently have and to specifically ensure that Bethal Extensions 3 and 8, Bethal Rand and the small holdings will never receive total water cut as was the case in December 2018 to January 2019;
  • That the revenue generation and revenue collection systems are improved; and
    That Eskom, Rand Water and all creditors are paid within the 30 day period, as determined by the MFMA.
