Masutha to open new Standerton Correctional Centre

Justice and Correctional Services Minister Michael Masutha will today officially open the newly built Standerton Correctional Centre in Mpumalanga.

Correctional Services said the centre will accommodate 1 486 inmates.

“This centre is to bring much-needed relief to the challenges of overcrowding currently facing Correctional Services,” the department said.

The Standerton Correctional Centre is constructed in line with the new generation correctional facilities model meant to facilitate rehabilitation. It differs fundamentally from older prisons, which were primarily designed to “warehouse” inmates, the department said.

“This facility boasts more modern security fencing, kitchen, laundry, hospital section and workshop equipment, as well as heating and ventilation systems, as prescribed by the Nelson Mandela Rules for the Treatment of Inmates,” the department said.
