How to support matriculates upon receiving their results

Immediate medical or professional help is advised.

Matric students and their parents may be despondent when they don’t receive their desired results.

According to Jasper Zwane, spokesperson for the department of education in Mpumalanga, it is important for parents not to place undue pressure on their children or to blame themselves when the results come out.

He urges parents to support their children and seek alternative ways to improve the learners results through the following options:

1. Learners may consider the second chance programme which was launched to provide support for learners who need to rewrite subjects.

2. Parents may encourage learners to enrol in a bridging course to help build a foundation which will allow them to access their desired tertiary education institution.

3. Learners may repeat the failed subjects to improve their marks.

Zwane urges parents to be aware of any signs of depression or odd behaviour which may include sudden withdrawal from the family, sudden mood swings and drastic personality changes.

“Immediate medical or professional help is advised, or they should contact the South African Depression and Anxiety Group on: 0800-12-13-14 or the suicide hotline on
0800-567-567. Alternatively contact the departmental Toll Free Line at 0800203116 during office hours,” he concludes.
