KaBokweni gogo’s only wish is to have a decent house for grandkids

With the Covid-19 pandemic gaining momentum and senior citizens being the most vulnerable, Gogo Anita Masuku's last wish is to have a decent roof over her head.

With the Covid-19 pandemic gaining momentum and senior citizens being the most vulnerable, Gogo Anita Masuku’s last wish is to have a decent roof over her head.
Looking after six orphaned children, Masuku lives in fear of the virus and that she might die leaving her grandchildren out in the cold.
“I don’t fear death. If it is my time I will gladly go, but I am worried that I will die and leave my grandkids without a house,” she said.

Masuku has been living in a one-room shack with her grandchildren. “Their parents died and I had to look after them. I am just a pensioner who is also on her way to the grave. I have been looking after these children for many years now and with Covid-19 taking my peers, I fear for the worst. My greatest fear is that I will leave these children in this shack. This will not give me rest, even beyond the grave,” she continued.
The gogo appealed for help, citing that she does not want money, but a rather a decent one- or two-room house.
The shack she currently uses is not suitable for living in. “When it rains we feel it, because it feels like we are sleeping outside,” she added.

A community member who has made it his business to identify and assist the needy, Thulani Khumalo, said his wish is to see Masuku’s dignity restored.
“Her plight really touched me. I took it upon myself to go out and seek support from good Samaritans. I appeal to all for any kind of donation that will see us build gogo Masuku a decent house. Members of the community can donate anything from bricks and cement, to window and door frames to make her wish a reality,” appealed Khumalo.
He, with the help of local business people and prominent politicians, has helped build houses for underprivileged families in this area.
“Politicians such as Peter Nyoni and local businesses such as Foreck Academy have enormously donated towards building houses for those in need. I am confident that working together we can help many others such as gogo Masuku,” continued Khumalo.
