Women can conquer anything and everything

The provincial legislature speaker, Busi Shiba, believes that a lot of work has been done to transform women’s lives in the province and the country in general.

Shiba argued that South Africa comes from a dark past where women’s views and feelings were not considered, but the tide has turned. “We come from a gloomy past where women were treated as objects, but they stood up for themselves and fought for their rights. They demonstrated the true power within. And even though women are being recognised today, but I believe there’s still a lot of work to be done,” she opened up.

Shiba was speaking exclusively to Mpumalanga News on Tuesday as the rest of the country geared to close Women’s Month. “It was women such as Lilian Ngoyi, Ruth First and many others who paved the way and as we celebrate this Women’s Month, we really must honour them,” she continued. She raised concerns over the brutal killings of women, citing that it reverses the gains of women emancipation. “It is sad and painful to see so many of us are being killed every day by abusive men. We need to double our efforts in the fight against gender-based violence until all women and children are safe to walk the streets without having to look behind them,” went on Shiba.

She applauded the ANC-led government for trusting women with huge responsibilities by placing them in key strategic positions.

“This province is currently led by a female premier, Refilwe Mtshweni-Tsipane, and the Director General is also a female, Sindi Xulu. This goes to show just serious and committed our government is in empowering women. This is really a positive sign of transformation,” said Shiba.

In conclusion, she said today’s women face an uphill battle, the coronavirus pandemic and the only way to emerge victorious is by coming together. “Covid-19 has disrupted our lives and if we are to succeed in our fight against this pandemic, we need to continue adhering to the regulations and take charge of our lives. Let us continue wearing our face masks, wash hands and adhere to social distancing,” she concluded.
