Lowveld Ramblers get merry as they reminisced about the best hikes of 2020
Members of the Lowveld Ramblers went on a seven-kilometre hike around the Sudwala area and then had a braai for their annual year-end celebration on Saturday November 28.
The hike took place in indigenous bush on an easy underfoot horse trail, and at times along a stream. Afterwards ramblers got the opportunity to socialise around a fire and talk about their highlights of 2020.
The consensus was that the eight-kilometre hike towards Devil’s Bridge near the Swaziland border which the club did on September 1, and the 16-kilometre Queen Rose hike in the Barberton region in the middle of November, were the clear winners.
“For me joining the club was the highlight of my year,” said, Armando Carvalho, who joined the Ramblers at the beginning of the year.
He continued, “I found the people very friendly and sights amazing. It’s nice to experience nature and places in the Lowveld that otherwise a person would not be able to experience on your own”.
The Lowveld Rambling Club is a volunteer driven initiative that aims to facilitate a hike every Saturday of the year, except during the Easter and Christmas holidays. “Our hiking club has been active for more than 40 years in the beautiful South African Lowveld. We have in excess of 70 active members of varying ages,“ said club secretary, Sanette Mattheus.
