Department of Education distributes food parcels to learners before they return to school

The spokesperson for the provincial DoE, Jasper Zwane, said the learners are expected to collect the food parcels from their schools.

The Department of Education (DoE) has started handing out food parcels to learners at their schools. This is in line with the prescripts of the National School Nutrition Programme (NSNP).

The spokesperson for the provincial DoE, Jasper Zwane, said the learners are expected to collect the food parcels from their schools.

“The food parcels are intended for use in the next 13 days while they will be at home before they return to school on February 15. When they return to school, all the learners reporting will be provided with hot cooked meals served by their schools as usual.”

According to Zwane, the food parcels are for the deserving learners.

“A feeding schedule that indicates the quantity and the quality of food to be distributed was provided to the schools.

The principals, NSNP coordinators and SGB members were trained. They will continue to be trained on the implementation of the NSNP, which includes engagement, training of food handlers, deliveries of food, and safety and hygiene. Principals, NSNP coordinators and SGBs are expected to monitor the delivery of these food packages to schools,” he explained.
