Heavy vehicles block town’s entrances

Hundreds of people were affected when heavy vehicles blocked the entrance to The Boulders complex and Lydenburg on Monday and Tuesday September 27 and 28.

Mine employees could not leave for work in time and parents were not able to take their children to school before mid-morning on both days.

These vehicles blocked the Lydenburg to Machadodorp (R36) and Lydenburg and Dullstroom (R540) three-way stop on Tuesday September 28 at around 03:00.

The Boulders residential area was also affected on Monday September 27. Some vehicles blocked the security entrance from 04:00, preventing residents from leaving the complex.

Trucks blocking the three-way stop at the Dullstroom and Machadodorp entrance to Lydenburg at 03:00 on Tuesday September 28.

“Upon police investigation, it was revealed that the roads were blockaded by an organisation called National Save Smelter.

“The organisation was established after Lydenburg Smelter and other smelters in the country were closed. “We hope the parties involved will solve their disputes,” said Capt Kaizer Moela, Lydenburg SAPS spokesperson.
