Crash on R40 leaves four dead

The accident involved a truck and a sedan.

Four people died yesterday afternoon (October 24) afternoon when a truck and sedan collided on the R40 between Acornhoek and Bushbuckridge.

According to a statement by the Department of Community Safety, Security and Liaison, the deceased were all occupants in the sedan; the truck driver was unharmed.

“Although the probe into the crash is under way, it appears as if the sedan may have been moving at a high speed.

“This led to the driver losing control and crashing into the truck, which was driving in the opposite direction.

“The sedan was completely ripped apart as the truck drove over it. There was nothing the emergency personnel responding to the scene could have done to save the four people.”

The department called on motorists to respect and obey the rules of the road. The MEC for community safety, security and liaison, Vusi Shongwe, urged everyone on the roads to help to make them safer by driving with greater caution.

“Let us all come to the party and stop this carnage. Roads and transport are an integral part of our economy, and that is why government is spending billions of rand to build and maintain these roads.

“A lot more is also spent on road safety initiatives. That is why it is so disheartening to lose so many people on the road,” said Shongwe.
