Theft from motor vehicles on the increase

Security companies, CPFs and the police have warned Lowvelders to practise extra caution with valuables in their vehicles.

After a recent surge in the theft of motor vehicles, security companies, CPFs and the police have warned Lowvelders to practise extra caution with valuables in their vehicles.

These institutions are currently on the lookout for a white Haval that has been seen with either the registration JC 17 XW GP or with no registration at all, has been involved in incidents in Mbombela, White River and Hazyview between November 8 and 16. Ettienne Vos of the White River CPF has asked the residents of these towns to assist by being on the lookout for this vehicle.

The public must note, however, that there are various Havals in these areas and that they should take care not to implicate innocent people. Members of the public should remain safe at all times and not confront any suspects.

If this vehicle is spotted, alert any security company, CPF member or the SAPS to its presence and whereabouts.

Hi-Tech Nelspruit, a member of the joint operation, provided the following tips to avoid car break-ins:

• Avoid parking your vehicle where there are no security officers.
• Do not leave your firearm in your vehicle’s glove compartment or anywhere in the vehicle (this is against the law!).
• Valuable items should be locked in your vehicle’s boot.
• Be aware of people coming to you and informing you that you have a flat tire.
• Always close your windows and lock the doors when driving, especially in the city centre.
• Do not use a cellular phone unless you have a hands-free kit.
• At night, park in well-lit areas.
