Health issues discussed in indigenous languages

The YouTube channel is called Ezempilo/Dza mutakalo Talk Show.

Dr Prudence Buthelezi, a health practitioner and co-founder of the National Health Care Professionals Association, has started a health talk show that reaches out to the public through indigenous languages.

Affectionately known as Dr. Pru, this local practitioner is reaching out to the public through languages they understand better. The YouTube channel is called Ezempilo/Dza mutakalo Talk Show.

“I started the channel after I realised that most black people are diagnosed with various medical conditions, but they do not understand exactly what is happening due to the language barrier.

“They do not have clarity on these conditions, which means they do not understand what is happening to their bodies.

Most channels explain the diseases in English and I decided to close the gap by getting speakers that will explain things in a language they understand.

“Sometimes when they go to hospital as patients, they find medical practitioners who cannot speak their African language. The channel will explain the diseases and we give the public a chance to ask questions,” she explained. The channel was started in August. “My first show made me realise that the show was well received, because we had about 250 viewers and the numbers are growing daily.

“I invite medical professionals to be guest speakers and the public gets the opportunity to learn from them. “We discuss various issues, such as how casualty at hospitals operates.

They also share information why some patients at health facilities are assisted and treated before those who have been waiting for a long time.”

Buthelezi said her dream is to see the talk show reaching people from all over the world.

“I would like to see the channel grow and reach out to people who are in other countries and need assistance with their medical conditions in their own language,” she explained.

You can follow Buthelezi on YouTube. The channel is called Dr Pru and she shares links of the show on her Facebook page: Prudence Buthelezi.
