Community members protest, demand chairperson’s resignation

These protesters gathered and blockaded the road with debris and tree branches last Friday.

Angry residents closed the road to their community on January 21 and demanded that the chairperson of the Mbuyane Communal Property Association resign.
They allege that Tities Masuku, the chairperson, has failed them as the community of Dwaleni and should step down.

These protesters gathered and blockaded the road with debris and tree branches last Friday.
Ntlakanipho Chikane, a community member, said they have tried to raise their concerns with Masuku since 2017.

“In the constitution that we have for the association, Tities Masuku is supposed to have stepped down after 20 years, however, he has been in this position since 2000.
“He refuses to show us financial statements and the last AGM was in 2010.

“We approached him after we had heard rumours that he had asked elderly people to sign papers that approve him remaining as the chairperson. This was supposed to be done in a meeting. We had hoped that we could resolve the matter, however, every time we approach Masuku he does not focus on the issues that we raise, instead he makes threats and we never get to talk about our problems.

“We have entrusted him with the association. We have learned that he is not doing things according to the laws set in the constitution of the Mbuyane Commual Property Association. We have had someone who is supposed to replace him since 2017.

The newspaper contacted Masuku. He said the community is correct that he has been serving for 22 years, however he dismissed that he had refused to show the community the financial statements.
“We have been trying to approach the chief’s family so that we can show the community the financial statements of the Mbuyane CPA,” he said.
