Dr Thulani Ngwenya is going places

Following his recent appointment as a doping officer for the upcoming FIFA World Cup, Ngwenya has been bestowed with yet another honour.

The South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee has appointed a local doctor, Thulani Ngwenya, as the team’s chief medical officer for the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, England, in July.

The medical staff of Team South Africa will be led by the current chief medical officer of the South African Football Association, who will fly with the team to England on July 18 and return on August 10, then afterwards will jet off to Qatar.

Ngwenya runs a sports clinic practice named Sports Medicine Africa Clinic, which he co-founded with other physicians, and thanks to his extensive knowledge and passion for sports medicine, he continues to flourish.

This appointment, according to Ngwenya, is something he never anticipated and is a dream come true.

“I am very overwhelmed with joy, very humbled and thrilled by such recognition. This is an opportunity that I will  utilise so that I can continue to grow as an individual and as a professional. I would like to offer my heartfelt gratitude to all of the parties involved in providing me with these opportunities to serve. I consider myself very fortunate to have acquired such recognition.

I intend to keep doing my best and providing the greatest professional service possible to the sports medicine profession. This trip to England is not only for the purpose of being a medic and attending to injuries, but also to acquire new skills and techniques from European doctors, which I aim to bring back to Africa,” said Ngwenya.

He proved that education can open doors of opportunities.

“The so-called cliché that education is the key to life’s secret doors is no lie. It has proven to me that natural talent combined with education are fundamental tools to sharpening one’s skills. Hard work, dedication, discipline and passion are the fuel needed for the skills to thrive and reach greater success. Setting objectives, prioritising, and putting in the effort are all critical. Education is vital, because it provides opportunities. If a township guy like me can make it, I believe anyone who works hard enough can,” concluded Ngwenya.
