Mpumalanga traffic enforcement issues nearly 18 000 written notices

Close to 114 000 vehicles were stopped and checked on various roads in the province.

The Department of Community Safety, Security and Liaison in Mpumalanga has confirmed that traffic law enforcement issued nearly 18 000 written notices to motorists between December 1 and 20.

Common offences included dangerous overtaking, excessive speeding, failure to wear seatbelts, worn tyres and faulty lights, among others.

Mpumalanga MEC for community safety, security and liaison Jackie Macie commended the officials involved and encouraged them to maintain the same momentum to save lives on the roads.

He appealed to motorists to be cautious, obey traffic rules and ensure the roadworthiness of their vehicles before embarking on their journeys.

“Every driver must play their part to prevent avoidable crashes. Most of the collisions we record could have been prevented had greater care been taken. Motorists must plan their trips to accommodate additional travel time due to weather conditions and roadworks,” the MEC added.

Meanwhile, a preliminary report indicates that more than 95 people have lost their lives in various road crashes across the province. Many of these incidents were caused by dangerous overtaking, loss of control and vehicles overturning.
