WATCH: Three killed in crash on the R40 in Mbombela

The cause of the accident is not yet known.

Three people were killed and two others seriously injured in a multi-vehicle crash on the R40 just past the Glenwood turnoff, in the direction of Barberton, in Mbombela earlier today, August 2.

The road has been closed in both directions from Church Unlimited towards Barberton to allow emergency services to clear the scene.

According to Moeti Mmusi, spokesperson for the Department of Community Safety, Security and Liaison, two of the deceased were travelling in a sedan and the third in an light delivery vehicle.

“The cause of the accident is still under investigation. The R40 has been closed to allow emergency services to clear the scene, and motorists are advised to use alternative routes,” said Mmusi.

There is no estimated time for the road to reopen.
